The detail that is still present in this sculpture after 2,000 or so years is amazing. The discolouration is caused by some corruption in the marble, but otherwise you can appreciate the extraordinary detail and beauty of this work. Yes a good (great) sculpture, but a sculpture that is not atypical of its time. That such fine craft and skill is not as exceptional as it might appear to us today. That is, that work of this calibre, just like fine work that we are presented with today, is just an accepted part of contemporary culture. That does bear some thinking about... at least, it makes me think.
