By the banks of the Yarra river. Though a far cry from the vibrant colours the Heidelberg school used, this image was inspired by some of the images of Arthur Streeton, one of the leaders of this important school of painting in Australia. Their work seems little known outside of Australia, but deserves more attention as it represents the first images of Europeans artists to portray Australia, its scenery and European settlers, as an Australia that was an unique experience, not a pale reflection of the English countryside and lifestyle.
